Feeling Daring ?

Beginning November 1, 2006, Microsoft will distribute Internet Explorer 7.0 through the “Automatic Updates” feature as a high-priority update. Although Microsoft is calling this an Automatic Update, it reportedly will seek user confirmation before proceeding with the upgrade. The Automatic Update should notify the user when IE 7.0 is ready to install by displaying a welcome screen. The user is then provided the option to choose whether or not to install the new version. IE 7.0 should not install automatically without the user’s consent.

At this writing, there is some discussion of compatibility issues, and there are recommendations to hold off on this upgrade. Some reports suggest that this is the most secure consumer browser yet, but advise that some of the new warnings may be unfamiliar. Perhaps some of the “hold-offers” are wanting to make certain that their own web sites are compliant and will work properly with this new browser. Still others are generally suspicious of Microsoft’s methods, and their (in)famous security consciousness. One very ominous report suggests that IE7 tracks programs installed after the IE7, and can/will scan for and disable those if IE7 is uninstalled. That alone makes me want to know more before I allow IE7 into my computers… Read from links these and decide for yourself.
