Coherent Randomness

So you thought randomness was always random … Hummm, maybe ‘mostly’ random?

My brother’s blog sent me on a research tour of Princteton University’s EGG project, otherwise known as The Global Consciousness Project. Pretty nifty title, reckon?

I have added their little blob of color to the left side of my pages, near the top just below the SomeNet logo. Think of it as a global ‘mood-stone’. If it’s green - randomness is normal. If it’s blue, randomness is less coherent. If it’s red - randomness is more coherent. At least this ‘blob’ is a little easier to interpret than the “tapestry“.

OK - go read it for yourself. I’m no crazier now than I was before I read about it … (of course anyone at work I showed this too said I oughta go find a job at NASA - that I was “way out there”…) Even Einstein was stumped over the sometimes ‘unrandomness’ of the random nature of nature. The Princeton folks have planted dozens of random number generators around the world, and are actually tracking the apparent effect when everyone thinks about the same thing. See their page studying coherence in randomness during and after the terrorist attacks on Sept 11, 2001, for example.

There is obviously enough potential here to keep lots of us busy for years. Lets hope that they come up with useful and fun stuff. /;^)

One Response to “Coherent Randomness”

In case you are using the MS Internet Explorer variety of browser, you may have noticed that the transparency around some images doesn’t work properly. The EGG color blob is a dynamic widget thingy, which also may not properly update itself with MSIE. Too bad. It’sa Microsoft kinda thing. The Mozilla/FireFox family (and others) don’t appear to have this problem.
    Personally I use Mozilla. I don’t care for MSIE … /;^)
