You_have_(no)mail

And so it goes in these modern times. We are so accustomed to always having our email service - what would we ever do without it…

NetDogsCurrently SomeNet email users are doing just that - without. Apparently during/after the thunderstorm Monday evening Charter was unable to assign the beloved IP address to this cable modem that it has been using for the last 4 or 5 years at least… Which has caused me considerable shufflin in the re-arrangement of various DNS master/slave relationships between here and ZFx.

I thought I was about to have a firm grip on how to complete the switcheroo, but returning to the keyboard after supper found that my sessions had been closed, and the server was not responding to the new address, as well as it’s old address. So I guess we will have to wait a bit longer - and see if this will calm down somewhat.

This is a profound moment in SomeNet history. This domain is approaching it’s 10th anniversary - and the mail server is currently showing 403 days uptime. Fortunately the server is ok, as is all the archived email - we just can’t have any right now. Hopefully there won’t be too much returned as undeliverable, as I expect to have things back on soon. It may well have a new URL, but soon we will have a new bookmark, and life will go on. We’ll get over it.

Thanks /;^)

    In the interim, I have a callsign <at> gmail.com mailbox …

Today it appears that Charter is experimenting with a new DHCP system. Early in the day it was granting 1Hr leases, that couldn’t renew. The only way out of that deadlock was to power cycle the cable modem. This afternoon the most recent lease indicates that it is good for 8Hr. We should know after 4 of those if it was able to renew itself. At least now we have all the tools in place to change the address as we need to, at least until the next generation mail server is established.
So - get it while it is working. Hopefully it won’t be gone for such long periods in the near future. In the forward looking picture - the email will not be tied to a Charter cable modem for much longer… Thanks /;^)
