We forgot to have the party .!. SomeNet has been here for 10 years now.

The world did keep on turning tho, I noticed that Google didn’t miss their 10th anniversary last month.

I guess SomeNet was born just before Google. Anyone remember 1998 ? Google has an interesting on-line time-line ; I know a lot has happened with SomeNet since then, but I haven’t built a career (or an empire) with my domain. Google is always so good to remember the birthdays of others, celebrations and holidays. They have a whole section with their ‘Google Doodles’ & Holiday Logos, like this one celebrating the big NASA birthday this summer. Planets, robots, rockets .. Exploring our universe: WoW !
I guess I was born a little before NASA, as I’m a little over 50 now. But I remember quite vividly hearing of John Glenn and the other Mercury astronauts, the Gemini and Apollo programs… visiting the moon - and watching this unfold live on black&white TV. NASA made a lot of history in their first 10 years. I always wanted to be a part of that - and now I guess I am at least adding a small piece to the puzzle. I’m proud to contribute what I can towards exploration. Happy Birthday NASA !
This is also the 25th anniversary of another space flight milestone that was very significant to me, the first ham radio operations from orbit. Owen Garriott - W5LFL was on STS-9 and operating from outer space. I happened to hear him that day as I was driving down the highway, and had a chance to say “Hello“. That simple event has provided considerable ‘spark‘ to my hobby for years and years. I even had opportunity to meet Dr. Garriott last year, and thanked him personally for that spark. Not too coincidentally - his son Richard Garriott is preparing for a trip to the International Space Station this month. Perhaps I can say “Hello” to him as well. I’ve posted some more information on wb5rmg.somenet.net … He intends to talk to school kids all over the world with the help of ham radio.
What better way to celebrate SomeNet’s birthday, than with a new piece of software…? I have discovered phpBB3, and had setup some private forums for another group, and thought I’d give it a try in my domain. Nothing fancy; some public forums, and some private. Someplace to talk about SomeThings - SomeFolks are more comfortable with the old bulletin-board environment, as compared to this blog style website. You would have to register to comment even in the public forums, but check it out : forums.somenet.net … the software works really well, and has a lot of features.
So it must have been about 10 years ago, that my daughter was learning all about computers and the internet, and said “Daddy - We ought to have our own domain“, or something like that. She has come a long way since then - now has her own laptop; and regularly uses Word, Excel, & Powerpoint for school projects…. She does digital photography and paint-shop type image work for the school yearbook, as well as numerous personal projects …. keeps up with her friends, cousins, current and former teachers with email …. I think getting a domain was a pretty good idea, reckon ? … … …
I can only roughly imagine what the next 10 years will show us.
Lets all hope and dream for the best…..
Thanks /;^)
