Thanksgiving

In the soon-coming days, our nation will be celebrating a holiday known as “Thanksgiving.”
It is a distinctively Christian holiday, having its origins with the Pilgrims whom came to this land seeking religious asylum and freedom.
Not only is the giving or expression of thanks and gratitude to one another a truly not-of-this-Earth practice, it is also uniquely God breathed, because we learn first the giving of thanks from Him.
While I have thought similarly, I have expressed it differently, saying that “all I have, and all I am, is a gift from Him. I did not ask for any of the gifts or talents I possess. And when it comes time for me to give a gift to the King of Kings, I do NOT want to bring some crummy gift, nor say something like, “LORD, I knew You were a hard man, reaping where You did not sow, and gathering where You did not scatter seed. And I was afraid, therefore, I went and his Your talent in the ground. See? Here is what is Yours.”"
My good friend Anthony Velez, with whom (and his family) I attend church here in Fresno, CA said this recently, and I thought it wholly apropos not only for this time and season, but frankly, forever.
“All we have is given to us, right on down to our breath and very being.
“Even what we have worked for is the result of talents we did not give to ourselves, and circumstances that were beyond our control.
“This means that thanksgiving is the supreme act of sanity, as it acknowledges the Giver and the gifted nature of our existence. Consequently, any response other than thanksgiving is an expression of some kind of departure from reality.”
